Who I am and what I do

Judy pics 027 (2)Hello! My name is Judith Robey. I have a Ph.D. in Russian literature from Indiana University and a B.A. in German and Russian from the University of Virginia. After teaching Russian language and literature at Davidson College and Williams College, I became a freelance copyeditor in 2007. My specialties are academic prose, the humanities (especially literature, culture, history, and the arts), and the social sciences (international studies, sociology, political science and policy). Over the past few years I’ve specialized in helping clients to transform dissertations and manuscripts into academic books and articles written in clear, readable prose. Having been a college professor for eight years and then worked as a copyeditor and proofreader for university presses and trade publishers, I bring the perspectives of both author and publisher to the process of preparing a manuscript for publication. My foreign language background has not only enabled me to edit manuscripts that include quotes and sources from the languages in which I am proficient (Russian, German, and French), it has also given me insights into how to tweak prose by ESL writers (and also those trained in British English) to sound natural and idiomatic to a US audience.
